About the experience "Experience the Festival of the Lilies"

This experience begins at 8:45 am, meeting in the atrium of the municipal buildings. Your Local will guide you to the viewing of the "first raising" of one of the obelisks- named the Lily, during which the streets in the centre of the city begin to fill with crowds to bursting point. Anticipated for the entire year, it is a powerfully moving moment. At the end of the second verse of the ballad, on an upbeat note, the Lilies are raised to the sky, marking the start of a wonderful performance that involves the whole city, in a collective rite, and continues until the Monday morning.

The experience then continues in a private location: a building from whose balconies you can watch the famous "Ballad of the Lilies and the Boat". This s a significant event, where a silver bust (dating back to 1700) is brought from inside the church out into the streets for a brief procession, passing by the lilies that line the side of the square and the boat that is positioned in the centre. The Bishop then proceeds with the solemn blessing of these structures. A decisive moment, it signals the arrival of the floats -giant light-adorned towers- one by one, and in no particular order, carried on the shoulders of 120 men (the “Paranza”) and to the rhythm of music, giving life to a show that is unique in this world. The entire ritual is seen from our privileged position overlooking a square overflowing with an oceanic crowd.

The experience will end with a tradition Nolan lunch..

Festa dei Gigli (Festival of Lilies) di Nola

The Festival of Lilies is a popular Catholic celebration that takes place every year at Nola on the occasion of the patron saint celebration dedicated to San Paolino. With this event the Nolani recall the return to the city of Pontius Meropio Paolino from the captivity by the barbarians in the first half of the fifth century. The party is part of the “Celebrations of big shoulder-borne processional structures”, which has been inserted since December 2013 in the UNESCO’s Oral and Intangible Heritage.

The festival takes place on June 22nd every year, if it falls on Sunday or the next, if midweek day, and consists of the dancing procession of the 8 Lilies and the Boat. Wooden obelisks are named after the ancient arts and crafts corporations.

The Lilies and the Boat go along a traditional path perched in the oldest nucleus of the city at the rhythm of original pieces and reinterpretations drawn from the Neapolitan, Italian and international musical traditions performed by a musical band placed on the basis of the structure. The event covers the entire course of the day. During the morning, the Lilies and the Boat are transported to Piazza Duomo, the main square of Nola, where the bishop is solemnly blessed.
